Pnei Yosef – By the Mechutan of Rabbi Chaim of Sanz. Two Parts, Including the Extremely Rare Second Part
Pnei Yosef, in two parts:
Part I: Shaarei HaRevacha – On the Laws of Ribbit (Usury).
Part II: Klala D’Pischa – On the Laws of Pesach.
Authored by Rabbi Yosef Chananaya Lipa Meislish, Av Beit Din of Premishla. Lemberg, 5607 [1847]. First Edition.
Rare and Unlisted Volume
The second part (Klala D’Pischa) is not recorded in the Hebrew Bibliographic Project and is not available in the National Library (only a facsimile edition exists).
In the introduction, the author recounts how he sent the manuscript on the laws of Ribbit to Vienna for censorship approval, but it was lost in transit. This caused him great distress, and he published notices worldwide in an effort to locate it. While working on a new version, the original manuscript was eventually found.
Important Rabbinic Approvals
The title pages praise the author as a prodigy, a scholar of many achievements, and a man of great accomplishments.
Rabbi Yosef Chananaya Lipa Meislish [1823-1865]
Rabbi Yosef Chananaya Lipa Meislish served as the rabbi of Przemyśl. He passed away at the young age of 42. At his funeral, the Shoel U’Meishiv eulogized him, declaring "there is no one like him."
He was a mechutan (in-law) of Rabbi Chaim of Sanz, the Divrei Chaim, who held him in exceptionally high regard. In one of his responsa, the Divrei Chaim refers to him as:
"My mechutan, the great gaon, the illustrious scholar, an expert and renowned figure, the pride of the generation, the esteemed Rabbi Yosef Chananaya Lipa Meislish, Av Beit Din of Przemyśl."
(Divrei Chaim, Even HaEzer, Part II, Siman 403).
